They call it Christmas Crack for a reason! It’s ridiculously easy, totally addictive, and only takes 5 basic ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

Crisp, buttery caramel-soaked crackers are topped with melted chocolate and a little sprinkle of flaky salt. It’s sweet, salty, crunchy, and melts in your mouth all at once.

This cracker toffee is perfect for giving out as gifts during the holidays, snacking on during Christmas movies, or bringing to holiday parties.

Christmas Crack Ingredients:

ingredients needed for Christmas cracker toffee in bowls.
  • Saltine crackers: These form the base of the recipe and give it that crispy crunch. You can swap in graham crackers or pretzel thins if you want to change things up.
  • Unsalted butter: Butter is key for making the caramel base. Unsalted gives you control over the saltiness, especially if your crackers are already salted.
  • Brown sugar: Brown sugar melts into the butter to create a quick, rich caramel. Light or dark brown sugar both work, but dark will give you a slightly more intense flavor!
  • Vanilla extract: Just a bit to enhance the other flavors.
  • Chopped dark chocolate: Use good-quality bars and chop them yourself for the best melt. Use whatever chocolate bar flavor you like!
  • Flaked sea salt (optional): A sprinkle on top adds a pop of salty contrast.

How to make Saltine Cracker Toffee:

This delicious treat is so easy to make and is perfect for making with the kids! Don’t forget to check the recipe card for the full list of instructions

  • Lay crackers in a single layer to cover the baking sheet.
  • Bring butter and brown sugar to a boil and cook for a few minutes.
  • Pour the caramel over the crackers and spread it evenly.
  • Sprinkle with chopped chocolate.

Tips for making the best Christmas Crack:

  • Add chocolate while the caramel is still hot but not scorching. You want the caramel hot enough to melt the chocolate but not so hot that it causes it to separate. Let it sit for 1–2 minutes before spreading.
  • Don’t stir once the caramel starts boiling. Stir while melting, but once it hits a boil, leave it alone. Stirring at this stage can cause sugar crystals to form, which leads to grainy or separated caramel.

How to store Christmas Crack candy:

Store Christmas Crack in an airtight container or ziplock bag for up to 5 days at room temperature.

If your house is warm, I recommend popping the container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks to prevent the chocolate from melting!

Can I freeze Christmas Crack?

The best thing about this cracker toffee is that you can freeze it! I love making a double batch and freezing the extras whenever I need it.

Make sure to layer the cracked pieces with parchment paper to prevent sticking. The crack will last in the freezer for up to one month.

Let it thaw slightly at room temperature so you don’t break a tooth!

Ingredients

  • 40 saltine crackers (with salted tops)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed (200 grams)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups chopped dark chocolate (about 300 grams)
  • flaked sea salt, optional

Instructions

  • Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil and spray with nonstick spray. Preheat the oven to 375℉.
  • Lay crackers in a single layer on prepared baking sheet, breaking to fit if necessary.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine butter and brown sugar. Melt, stirring often, over medium heat. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and boil for 3 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat and stir in vanilla.
  • Pour caramel over crackers in the pan. Bake for 5 minutes.
  • Remove the pan from the oven — the caramel will be bubbly and the crackers will be floating.
  • Top with chopped chocolate and allow to sit for 2 minutes before spreading to melt.
  • Allow to cool for 15 minutes before sprinkle with flaky salt if desired. Allow to cool completely before breaking or slicing. You can speed this up by placing it in the fridge!

Notes

Ingredients and Substitutions:
Crackers: any kind of neutral flavored cracker works here! You can use graham crackers, pretzel thins or pretzel crackers, you name it.
Chocolate: you can use semisweet chocolate for a sweeter flavor (trust me, the dark chocolate balances the sweetness nicely!), or chocolate chips if that’s what you have — although they don’t melt as nicely.
Salt: If using salted butter, I recommend unsalted crackers. If you’re like me and you love a salty/sweet treat, I highly recommend a sprinkle of flaked salt. Wait until the chocolate has cooled some before adding it so it doesn’t melt in.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Add crunch: Crush up some pecans, walnuts, or pretzels and sprinkle them over the chocolate before chilling in the fridge.
  • Chocolate swap: Feel free to use semi-sweet, dark, milk, or even white chocolate for the chocolate layer.
  • Add candies: Sprinkle candies like M&Ms, toffee bits, pieces of a candy bar, sprinkles, or even candy canes for a festive twist!

What’s the best way to break the crack into pieces?

Once the chocolate has fully set, you can break it apart by hand into rustic, uneven chunks.

If you prefer cleaner pieces, use a sharp knife to slice them after chilling. Just make sure it’s fully cooled or refrigerated first, so it snaps cleanly.
