Step by step guide to making and freezing homemade frozen pizzas so you can enjoy them later!

one piece of pizza being lifted from the whole in the pan

Hi friends! I’m bringing you a bit of a different post today, because, well — January. I’m going to be working to bring you some really insanely useful recipes and posts. There are times (did you see my December??), where I really like to bring you fun, creative, sometimes indulgent recipes — and I’m still going to bring you some of those, too!

But it seems like January is a time when a lot of people are buckling down and getting back to a routine, and there is this big part of my Type A personality that loves routine. I also love that in making this post I got (a) pizza for supper and (b) to stock my freezer with more pizza!

Pizza is one of those things we have often. We just don’t get sick of it! And if I can stock up so I’m able to resist those cheap garbage frozen pizzas at the grocery store (not that I haven’t gone there every now and then!), even better.

Here’s how I do it:

  1. Start with the dough.

I use my whole wheat pizza dough recipe, and I doubled it to make 4 15″ or cookie sheet size pizzas (about 10″x15″). This time, I made 2 baking sheet size and 2 15″ round pizzas.

Let the dough rise, as per the original recipe. Spray your pans with non-stick spray, then preheat the oven to 425 degrees F and roll it out as you would to fit your pizza pans. Brush with about 1 teaspoon of canola oil and bake for 10-12 minutes — it won’t be completely baked. You want it baked about half way through. It will look dry on top but won’t be browned.

Set aside and let cool to room temperature (15-30 minutes is good enough).

It’ll look like this:

2. Top it.

Spread your sauce on, top with your meat and cheese (or your cheese and meat — whichever way you prefer!).

3. Wrap it.

I like to use plastic wrap first, to protect from freezer burn, and then cover in tin foil because it seals so easily. Plastic wrap and I aren’t the best of friends, so the tin foil ensures that my pizza gets really great coverage and a great seal.

Don’t forget to label it — say what it is and when it was made! You can also include the baking instructions: Bake at 425 degrees F for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

4. Freeze it.

Place it in the freezer and freeze for up to 3 months.

5. Bake it.

Heat oven to 425 degrees F and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and cheese is melted.

Ingredients

  • Pizza dough — homemade or store bough see above for recipe!
  • 1 teaspoon canola oil for each pizza
  • Pizza sauce
  • Pizza toppings: meat veggies, cheese as desired

Instructions

  • Make your dough, or thaw your store bough dough. Spray pans with non-stick spray. Then preheat the oven to 425 degrees F and roll it out to fit your pizza pans. Brush with about 1 teaspoon oil and bake for 10-12 minutes. You want it baked about half way through. It will look dry on top but won’t be browned.
  • Set aside and let cool to room temperature (15-30 minutes).
  • Spread your sauce on, top with your meat and cheese.
  • Wrap it in plastic wrap and then tin foil to protect from freezer burn.
  • Label it with the name and when it was made! Include the baking instructions: “Bake at 425 degrees F for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.”
  • Freeze it up to 3 months.
  • When ready to serve, heat oven to 425 degrees F and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and cheese is melted.

Notes

For 4 pizzas, I used a double recipe of my Whole Wheat Pizza Dough, about 1.5 jars of pizza sauce, 4-500 grams deli meat (pepperoni, etc.), and 1 700g block of mozzarella cheese.

If I was to do this with personalize pan pizzas instead of full size, would the cooking times vary? I’d be using 6″ pans.

  2. Shari says

Love the idea! Just as an FYI, whenever I freeze something that needs to be cooked before serving, such as a casserole or cookie dough, I always include the baking directions on the label. Then you won’t be stuck going, “How do I bake this again?” With foil covering the dish, you can get confused as to what’s what!

Just made some using my 7 inch pans. These are perfect for a pizza for one person..
So glad I tried your recipe.

  4. Teena says

Loving this! Think I’ll skip the cling wrap/foil combo and just use my Food Saver (lawd I love that thang, lol). Have you ever just made the pizza and left it naked, then froze to top later? Wonder if that would keep longer than the whole pizza put together frozen? Thanks so much for this recipe and idea! 😉

    • Ashley Fehr says

Ooo that’s a great idea! Wish I had one of those! Do you mean just the pizza crust? Or the crust with sauce? I think it would keep perfectly however you do it!

  5. Caroline says

I am going to try your recipe for crust, but does it work just as well without using the flaxseed. If I’m not using should I add/alter the recipe at all?

  6. Stacey @ Bake Eat Repeat says

Love this idea – I’ve never thought to freeze homemade pizza but what a great idea! Sometimes you don’t want to actually make everything to have pizza, but the store-bought frozen ones just aren’t as good. Totally trying this next time I make pizza!

  7. Izzy @ She Likes Food says

I thought you were going to talk about how to cook a regular frozen pizza at first, haha, but this is much better! I’ve never even thought about making my own frozen pizzas before but it is such a great idea! We eat so much pizza that it would be great to have some homemade frozen ones ready to pop in the oven 🙂

  8. Dorothy Dunton says

Hi Ashley! It’s so nice to be able to pull a meal out of the freezer on those “I don’t feel like cooking” days! And they are customized – we like ours loaded with meats and veggies. 🙂

  9. Amanda says

I really like making my own homemade pizza, so this is perfect for me. I love having satisfying frozen meals in the house.
